List of rare skins?
Hello!
I've been looking through the forums and wiki, and I haven't been able to find a list of which weapon skins are considered "rare" or worth attempting to sell. Any idea where I can find that?
Apologies if I overlooked something. Complete newbie here.
Thanks!

Here's a link to a thread on page 3 of this section where the same kind of question was asked. I've seen this same kind of question asked often over the years. It's either impossible, or extremely hard, to give a 100% correct answer.
There are some problems with making such a list ...
1) There's a big difference between "rare" and "popular." I'd argue that, for example, Voltaic Spears are FAR from "rare." However, they're very popular right now, so they're most definitely worth selling. Similarly, I'd say Melon Hammers are pretty rare (I never see them drop, and I see a lot more players using VS than Melon Hammers,) but there's almost no demand for them.
2) It's not just skin that makes a difference - the stats of the item are important, too. For example, max r9 insc. Round Shields can be hard to give away, yet I notice a fair amount of wtb ads for this skin specifically in low req versions (16/8, 15/7, etc.) As common a skin as they are, they seem to be popular with a good number of players ... most of whom appear to be building caster shields.
3) Generally, supply these days vastly exceeds demand for most stuff. With so many people chest running, farming, and using the zChest, etc. the market is often flooded with max, gold r9 versions of skins that used to sell for XXe+ (examples are Elemental Swords, Dead Swords, Colossal Scimitars, Dead Bows ... I could keep going for a while.) So, while you might have a nice and popular drop, you may not be able to reasonably expect to sell it for more than 5-10k, if even that much.
4) Tastes vary! One man's ideal axe skin is another man's merch food. :/
5) What's worth keeping and trying to sell is often a question more of what's popular than what's rare. The popular skins change over time. The meta changes over time, too, and affects the type of weapons that are popular. Right now, it can take a long time to sell most gold r9 scythes for even 1-3k. Not many people are looking to build new scythes.
If someone can make up a rare skin list, I suspect it will be ...
- subject to a lot of disagreement and/or contest over what should and shouldn't be there
- out of date within 6 mo.
The best advice I can give you is to check out the skin galleries on Wiki and start spending time watching trade chat in game and reading sell and buy threads around here.

I find that once I'm familiar with a skin it's a lot easier for me to notice and remember if I see evidence that other players consider them valuable (from wts and wtb ads.)
Sorry I can't help with your list.
EDIT - Well, jimbo has accepted the challenge! Huzzah jimbo! I do wish you the best of luck!!! We're pals, and I've been going through his list and sending him my feedback on anything I *think* he may have left off that should be on there. If he's willing to take on such a task, I'm certainly willing to do what I can to help out!

Another consideration is inscribable vs. oldschool. What's valuable is often very different depending on this factor. For instance, the Diamond and Iridescent Aegis shield skins - the insc versions (Com, Mot, Tac) are usually worth around 5k for q9. On the flipside, the oldschool versions (Tac, Str) can be worth hundreds of ecto with the right inherent mods. Much more rare, so much more valuable.
Keeping track of what's in-demand for insc stuff is far easier (imo) than trying to attach value to nicely-modded (inherent of course) oldschool stuff. Oldschool shields and staves especially tend to vary widely in value - even with the same skin, slight variations in inherent mods and/or req can mean huge deviations in value. Most of the people with a good handle on such things are seasoned traders who've been in the high-end collecting game for ages.
For most stuff, stick a post in the PC forum and you'll usually get an answer after a bump or two. If you're doing that, it's usually a good idea to get a few different opinions, since some of the people who frequent the PC forum essentially have no idea what they're talking about. :P
EDIT:
It also depends on what you consider to be "valuable". For some people who don't have a lot of cash, selling a q9 insc item for 10k might be a big deal. If you've got tons of cash and ecto, most insc stuff might not be worth the time it takes you to sell it.
EDIT#2:
I put together a quick list of inscribable stuff that (imo) is worth 8k+. It's in my userspace on Guildwiki, and you can find it here. Luny and anyone else familiar with pricing should feel free to edit it as they like, since it's entirely possible that I missed something. It should still be a decent "rough guide" though.
EDIT #3
Updated the link above with the new url for GuildWiki.

Thank you both for your informative responses
I didn't realize that rare does not automatically mean valuable - although that makes perfect sense now that I read your explanations. I'll take a look through that gallery link you provided, and I've bookmarked Jimbo's list of insc skins worth the time to try and sell. ^^
Again, my thanks to both of you People like you are what makes the GW community superior to that of other MMOs!

No problem at all
I updated the list with a bunch of omissions that Luny PM'ed to me, so it should be fairly complete (although Luny hasn't gotten to the staves and wands section yet ).
All strictly "in my opinion" of course, so when in doubt, use the PC forum.

Oh, you're gonna be sorry! As I'm thinking about wands and staffs, I'm thinking about "improvements" to your list at the same time ... jimbo is DOOMED!!!
EDIT - but you get bonus points for your very careful phrasing above! That's smooth! lol

Uh. That doesn't sound encouraging
As for the phrasing, I have no idea what you're talking about.
EDIT:
Something to keep in mind is that GuildWiki is likely changing hosts at some point soon, so the URL for the list will change too. I'll make sure to update the link whenever the move happens.
(Although Wikia are (I believe) planning on keeping their own GW wiki (good luck with that with no editors ), my userspace is flagged for deletion whenever the move to the new host happens. So the list will disappear from it's current location)

Well, I was thinking that for insc. stuff, what about a table by type? I don't know wiki code for tables, but I'm sure I could find an example somewhere and hack one together.
List every insc. skin that can be had in PvE (there really aren't that many compared to what you've got already.) Then have columns for things like,- Date the line for this particular skin's entries in the table was last adjusted because lists and tables of GW prices, etc. which lack indication of when the listed info was last updated are a big pet peeve of mine! Seriously, w/out knowing the date it was considered "valid," it quickly becomes useless or worse, misleading.
- "Is it even reasonable to expect to get up to 5k for this in r9 gold?" (Maybe another line that says if it's something you should probably just merch or salvage for material no matter what - Sage Blades come to mind ... honestly, why even bother holding onto that in r9 gold unless you're using it yourself? ... no one will buy them at any price. The iron ingots are more valuable.)
- "Is it plausible that you might get up to 10k for this in r9 gold?"
- "Is it likely that you could get over 10k (perhaps a lot over) for this in r9 gold?" aka "Should you bother looking for PC info on this one first?"
- "Is it likely that this is valuable even in req. over 9?"
For inherent gear, something like a list of what inherent mods on which kind of gear are worth bothering to even worrying about trying to sell. The list could have that info, plus maybe list of skins which can't be had insc. But save folks the trouble of keeping staffs with -disease and singled modded wands/shields/offhands, etc., see?
Told you you'd be sorry! Perhaps next time you'll think twice before you get me thinking of such a thing! lol
Anyway, I'm off to review staff and wand skins for your list now ... after a snack first.
wrt wikia ... want to consider doing this on the official wiki instead or in addition to the main?
Oh, and another thing - make sure you put a big warning at the top that folks should check the history. I don't think it's overly pessimistic of me to suspect that sooner or later some little twerp will come along and vandalize the page ... or worse, try to use it to convince someone clueless on prices to sell cheap or buy high.
EDIT - oops, and @ Renbletz ... you're welcome! Again sorry that I can't offer much help (though jimbo may have managed to change my mind - dratted jimbo!)

For the record, I just sent the PM with my feedback on staffs and wands. Neener neener! Now you have to go update the list!
